Language & Education


In Taiwan, there are many different language spoke by its people. Minnanese which is also known as the Taiwanese Language, Hakka Language, Mandarin Chinese, Indigenous Language and also a few who speaks Japanese.

In the past, during the Japanese Occupation, Japanese is an official language that is needed to be learnt. Hence, many older generations in Taiwan speaks Japanese language.

When Taiwan was under the rule of Kuomingtang, it promote heavily on learning and speaking Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan, discouraging the use of Taiwanese language. Therefore, the official language in Taiwan is Mandarin Chinese and the second language in Taiwan is English.

English being a foreign language is a compulsory subject to be taught in schools in Taiwan. On top of that, during their first to sixth grade in school, each and everyone is take up another additional language ( Hakka or indigenous language ).

Junior High – Senior High

Similar to Singapore education system, the education system in Taiwan has a Basic Competence Test which required graduates to sit for these 5 subjects : Chinese, English, Mathematics, Natural Science and Social Science.

*Senior High = Secondary level in Singapore

Secondary Education

In their secondary education, students can choose to attend either Senior High School or Senior Vocational School which will equip student with additional skills. Senior Vocational School will allow student to choose which path of professional they would like to be in the future.
